2008 - extract 3
Finally I have some spare time and can write some more news . I have some bad news and some good news. So maybe first the bad news. Because of the hot climate and humidity plus, of course, six to eight hours' training a day I got sick. Actually I got a skin infection (the same one I had before in Thailand). I think I just have to get used to it. Anyway I went to the doctor, took some tablets and cream and had two days' break, and today I started training again.
Actually, I don't want to stop my training, so I decided I will carry on training every morning, and during the evening will watch all the trainers and top fighters from the gym so I can pick up some new techniques and tricks. So after morning training together with the manager (Mr. Jakae), we went to a town called Suphan Buri. The town is about 80km away from Bangkok. There was this big tournment, sponsored by the bigest promoter in Thailand, Mr Songchai. The ring was based in the open air, inside the big temple complex. From our gym there were two guys fighting.
I must admit we were standing in the corner of the ring, together with all the trainers and managers. The temperature outside was about 35-40 celsius, and fighters had to do five, three-minute rounds. One guy from our gym unfortunately lost after getting a couple of elbows to the head, but the other guy was amazing. His name was Pen Phat and he had around 250 fights already and he is in his twenties. He fought five good rounds, and showed a really good muay Thai straight forward fighting style. The fight started slowly, fighters usually want to check what are the weak and strong sides of each other. Finally, rounds number four and five were what the crowd were waiting for. There was excellent clinch work, many knees and beautiful roundhouse kicks.
After the fight we took a picture with the fighter, and went to the restaurant for a delicious Thai dinner. During the dinner, there were our trainers, Mr Jakae and his close friends. The dinner was close to Suphan Buri, in that area where there are not a lot of falangs (foreigners), so all the Thai people in that restaurant were looking at us, smiling and trying to catch our attention. During the dinner, even friends of Mr Jakae were trying to talk with us, and teach us some Thai language amd this continued when we got back home!
I want to tell you so much that I just dont know where to start. Anyway I wanted to tell you some more info about another trainer called Bo. For the past two days of my training I trained with him. This is one of the strongest Thai trainers I have ever seen. He is 30 years old, he is short like most Thai people, but very fit, with muscles all over. Whenever he does the pad work, you can see the excitment on his face, and the stronger you hit the better he likes it. I am probably 30kg heavier than him, but whenever I was doing punches or kicks I couldn't move him an inch. He used to teach the famous Anuwat Kaewsamrit. The difference between him and other trainers is that he is incredibly humble. For example, he always says he is our friend, not a trainer, and whenever we asked him about how many fights he had, he was too shy to say that he fought more than 200 times. And whenever I ask him to explain something to me he never says no.
The past two evenings after the dinner, he showed me how to enter the ring, how many bows to do to each corne and how to do a perfect ram muay. That is it for now guys. Tomorrow is Sunday, a day off, and on Monday I have to start again. I can't wait to start training again!
